Calculator methodology
CostMeter is designed around transparent formulas, editable assumptions and practical explanations rather than hidden estimates.
Our approach
Each calculator identifies the main inputs needed for a useful estimate, applies a standard mathematical relationship, and shows the most decision-relevant outputs. Where a cost depends on local conditions—such as electricity or fuel prices—we let the visitor replace any preset with their own figure.
Country presets
Country and regional values are convenience starting points, not live tariffs or official price quotes. They may become outdated and should be replaced with the visitor's current bill, tariff, lender quote, fuel price or other authoritative figure.
Testing
Calculator formulas are tested against simple hand-checkable examples and edge cases such as zero interest or zero usage. We prefer straightforward formulas that visitors can understand and verify.
Limitations
CostMeter tools are informational. They may not include taxes, financing fees, tiered tariffs, subsidies, rebates, insurance, depreciation, local regulations or other factors unless those inputs are explicitly shown.
Corrections
If a calculator produces an unexpected result, first verify the units and inputs. We also review calculators as the site develops and update explanations when assumptions need to be clearer.
